In a world that continues to spin
wildly out of control, always threatening
so shift off its axis to unknown ends,
the faithful go merrily about their way
while those who believe but doubt
question why God does not simply
do away with evil, for that must surely
fall within His omnipotence, evil
banished by a Holy thought or two.
What God would tell them, as would
Buddha, is that if evil suddenly
disappeared, good would do so as well,
for as the songwriter sappily said
“you can’t have one without the other”
in a dualistic world of dualistic minds.
But you can render labels meaningless
and things will be as things will be,
which is how they have been all along,
but you will no longer be able
to spend time worrying about them.
