Slide between the sheets
exhausted after a day of walking
the streets of this old city.
This is a city of squares, statues
too many to fully recall, each
one’s history unknown to most,
and with the slowly falling rain
to remain unknown to us.
Despite its age and great beauty
this is a tourist city, one where
restaurants don’t take reservations
knowing their tables will be full
with walk-ins and those
whose feet say it is time to stop
even if their stomachs disagree.
The dawn will bring us a new year.
a walk to a coffee shop where
the nonfat Cortados and scones
remind us of the home
to which we will soon return.
