ELAPSED TIME

Time measured out
in a slow twisting
of a fork, pitched
into day’s heart
bleeding heat
as pulses fade.
Tequila breeze
blows across
the verandah
palms rustling
to rhythms of life
bodies snatched
carried off, places
unseen, unimagined.
Wings float uplifted
her face in sleep
serene, feline.
Night’s morphine drip
edges into sleep
dreams of her touch
closes eyes
to phoenix’s ascension.
