On the path around the pond
the male of a pair of Sandhill Cranes
stares closely at us wondering, perhaps,
which if any of us actually belongs here.
We more than return his stare, fumbling
for our cameras that claim they are phones,
wanting to capture this moment.
The crane proudly approaches, gets
inches from the arm-extended phone. Is he
trying to see what model we carry
or does he want prior approval
of the pictures we have already taken.
His partner/wife ignores us and just
for a brief moment we imagine he is
trying to make her jealous of another woman
The crane, reading our thoughts
as birds can do, scoff at us
for he know we are blocking his path
to the shore of the pond where breakfast awaits.
