IN BAKERSFIELD

In Bakersfield they don’t give a damn about hurricanes, he realized. They might watch them on the news, be amazed at the force of the wind, the water, the destruction they could cause, but they were abstract, like blizzards now were to him, a curiosity of nature but having no bearing on his day to day life. That was the problem with places like Bakersfield, they had nothing to do with his world. They might have been on a different planet. They were on a different planet according to some in his state. But he knew that in Bakersfield they believed his place had nothing to do with their world, he was the one on a different planet. In Iowa they did not care for either place for Iowa truly was was its own little world.
