You would think that those
with an abiding faith in an afterlife
would approach the transition
to death without fear, merely a step
into a promising, promised unknown.
And perhaps some do take this approach
but many, it seems, when the abyss opens
before them and there is no going back
express the moment of fear, of terror,
thoughts reserved to the nonbelievers.
Of course none will recount that
final moment, leaving us to whatever
assumptions we choose to make
and we do so with the faith that we
know what lies ahead until we, too,
eventually get to that final moment.
