NOT THAT

A writing teacher I admire
once told me that my true
creative self would only be
unleashed if I stopped
writing about what I knew
and began writing
about what I didn’t know.
I knew what he meant
but I can be a literal soul
all too often, with years
of practicing law and in
that state of mind I knew
I was doomed to failure
for if I wrote about what
I didn’t know I’d have to
learn it, and by the advice
I couldn’t write about it, but
if I didn’t learn it, know it
there was nothing to write about.
