For a reason I can no longer recall
I began folding origami cranes
with the intention of completing
a senbazuru, 1000 cranes strung
to hang somewhere although I know
I had no idea then where that might be.
It was after reading how a young
Japanese girl folded 1000 cranes,
in a hope for peace after Hiroshima
was devastated by our new bomb.
I did fold about 300 cranes before
I stopped for lack of time and waning interest.
Looking at our world now, in Ukraine
and Gaza I know that it is probably time
for me to take up crane folding again
and complete the missing 700 cranes
in the hope that my senbazuru would
be the one to bring about a peace
our leaders have no idea how to attain.
