The rains finally came the other day,
not the tropical storms that this season
promises, those will come later
we are assured by the weathermen
who sometimes struggle to describe
what is happening outside their windows.
It was the sort of rain we had almost
forgotten during our tropical drought
which, yes, does seem like a contradiction
in terms until you look at the straw
that once was our lawn (and which
was never really grass as you know it).
It fell like vertical waves washing
over everything, even the cat
abandoned her usual perches and
took shelter under the table to watch
the sodden birds try and decide where
they might seek shelter and she
was offering no solace whatsoever.
Today it is dry although the weatherman
says it might rain tonight or tomorrow,
which is pretty much like saying
the sun may set tonight or rise
again tomorrow so we will just wait
for those promised tropical storms
that will turn the yard into wading pools.
