AGAIN, FROM THE TOP

How many years had it been?
Neither of them wanted to count,
each said they had moved on,
neither knowing where on was.
Yet when by chance they met again
neither could say why it had ended,
but each had been certain it was
the other who had ended it, much,
so very much to their surprise.
That was always how it had been,
each knowing they were right,
the other left out in the emotional dark.
They knew in that moment a recognition
that neither had actually left, they
simply had drifted like boats
caught in opposing currents,
moving ever farther apart until
the other receded into a void,
one they could never hope to enter,
and no desire to attempt to do so.
Each acknowledged the other
in the moment of reconnection
with an unspoken apology, each
thinking it was they who had left
but neither daring to say so.
So they went off separately again
knowing the currents of life
would one day have them intersect
once again, the scene woiuld be replayed
again from the same tired script.
