I QUIT

Nature joined me uninvited this morning
as I sat on the lanai overlooking what
once was a bird filled wetland, now grown
over with Carolina willow and
the too frequent Brazilian Cherry.
“The birds have given up on you,”
I thought I heard nature say, “I suppose
you miss them?”. “Terribly,” I said
“for they were a part of me that has
now withered under the noise
of the incessant building all around me.”
“What will you do, then,” nature asked.
I would tell her that I am powerless
to do anything, but we would both know
that would be an excuse and not
an answer for in a world where everyone
is powerless hope takes wing with
the departing birds that once lived
and nested here and even the willow
that has consumed their habitat grows
bored with the sameness all around it.
