I have come to recognize the night
as both dear friend and hated foe,
purveyor of nightmare and delight.
But now I wish that it would stay away
for my once immortality is gone
and for each night I now have one less day.
But night always turns down my plaintive prayer
and reminds me that I am still alive
and death is a burden we all must bear.
I bid each day goodbye and welcome night,
and hope that it will yield another day
when I can say my prayers for dawn’s first light.
