I live in a country that I
no longer recognize although
I was born here and never lived
in any other place.
I once lived in a land of doors
through which the likes of us
entered to find refuge, find life
but now we build walls
and hope they allow no entry.
Once we were full palettes,
an endless variety of shades,
of human hues but now
some say monochromism
is what, is all, we need.
Once we were of motley faiths
and all were true, all believed
in the same principles
but now you say I should
accept yours as the only one
that is true or face a hell
you imagine for all but yourself.
You may not hear me but I
will shout again, I want
the country I remember so well.
