What we will never understand
is that a wolf howling at the moon
is engaged in a conversation, the silence
we hear is the moon’s answer to the wolf.
We never stop to fully listen,
for in silence much is said by nature
that our self-imposed deafness
to all but our kind forces us to ignore.
In silent dreams entire worlds open up
and the laws of physics may be suspended
if the mind chooses, gravity becomes
only a concept, one no longer binding.
The jackrabbit on the mesa hears
both coyote and the moon, hears
their stories which it passes down
from generation to generation as
we inherit and pass down our deafness.
