When we visited Arles
we expected to see paintings
of wildflowers, night skies,
all the images that Van Gogh
left as his legacy.

We did see posters,
postcards and books
but not a single painting
is to be found by the master
where he painted.

We at least hoped
the night sky from the boat
would be something
to remember always
but clouds over Arles
look much the same
as clouds everywhere else.
