So tomorrow he’ll tell me
it’s stable and he will smile
I think that’s why he went
into ophthalmology and not
oncology, telling patients
that they have cancer and then
smiling wouldn’t play well
and I am willing to bet that he
cannot help himself, he
is just one of those smilers.
And strangely, I will take solace
that my right eye is not
appreciably more blind
than it was three months ago,
when it bordered on legal
blindness, and with that news
I will look at him with
my one half good eye, squint
a bit and for no good reason smile
for I cannot help myself either.
