Under the ever watchful eye
of the Red-shouldered Hawk
the Great Blue Heron forages
for sticks for its slowly
growing nest which it
has carefully nestled in
the heart of the small wetland.
The hawk, his own nest
now complete stands sentry
warning me, my camera
to keep our distance for this
is his territory and only
those of fellow wing
are allowed to enter into
its privileged realm.
Soon after the heron leaves
to go back to his building
the hawk kee-aahs a goodbye
and lifts into the morning sky
