DREAM ON, MY GOD

Good night, Sisyphus
try to get some sleep.
It’s been a long day
and you already know
the rock will await you
when you arise in the morning.
I suppose by now
you’ve come to realize
there is no percentage
in pissing off the Gods.
Think of this as a personal
re-education center
where right thinking
is the lesson of this
and every other day.
Did you really think
they would let you stand
in the middle of the Square
openly mocking
all of their edicts.
Sleep old fellow,
we have all the time
in the world, it is
one of the benefits
of immortality.

ISLAND

He feels like a rock
cast into a river
partially rising above
the water now forced
to flow around him.
It pulls at him, seems
to say you belong
in the sea, let us
carry you there, but he
can no longer move
and knows he will meet
the ocean in bits pulled off
by the jetsam of other
people’s lives as it flows
past him on this leg
of its endless journey.

PHILOSOPHER’S STONE

The philosopher
sits on a rock
overlooking a pond
with a single water lily.
To defeat your enemy,
you must have his mind.
To have his mind,
you must be him.
To be him, you must
cast off self-loathing
When there is no loathing,
he is not your enemy.
If you have no enemies,
you may sit on a rock
and look over a pond,
but only if there is
but a single water lily.

WITHOUT WITHIN

Within a rock
there is another rock
that sits in the middle of the stream,
in sight, just out of reach.

Within a cloud
there is another cloud
whose rain has fed
a barren field.

Within this city
there is another city
whose streets I have walked
in countless dreams.

Within this mirror
there is another mirror
that reflects the face
within my face.

TEN DIRECTIONS

It would help, she said,
if you would stop thinking
of yourself as Sisyphus
and all of life as the rock.
You might actually, one day,
begin to enjoy what you do.

It would help, he said,
if I could be like
a great blue heron,
grow wings and take
to a summer sky leaving
all of this behind me,
going wherever I wish.

Perhaps, she replied, it
is better that you see
yourself as Sisyphus, for
everyone know that you
have no sense of direction.
