You wanted a zen moment,
more than one actually,
but were not sure
where to look.
You wandered about
looking for
the right path
said
you never found it.
There is
no zen moment,
there is
no right path
there is
this path
this moment
only.
You wanted a zen moment,
more than one actually,
but were not sure
where to look.
You wandered about
looking for
the right path
said
you never found it.
There is
no zen moment,
there is
no right path
there is
this path
this moment
only.
It is certain that they are coming,
and you assume or hope it is for me,
but what if they are coming for you?
You think that they will not find you
but they know where you are,
so where will you try to hide?
You think that you will be safe,
that they will ignore you, that you
can hide, but if they find you
what will happen, at what cost?
Will you be ready, will you stand
and oppose them or reluctantly
welcome them when they refuse
to leave, demand more, demand all?
Perhaps it is me they will come for
and you need not worry, perhaps
they will stop now and not come, but
can you live in a world of perhaps?
What is it you are looking for,
what you expect to find
and how will you know
if you find it?
You expected your teacher
to present it to you?
What would you do with it
if you did receive it?
You must first see that you
are both the searcher
and the teacher and
you already have
what you are searching for,
for you find things when
you stop looking for them.
A reflection on Case 17 of the Book of Equanimity (SHôYôROKU 従容錄)
When your teacher
hands you the dharma
what do you find in your hands?
What will you do
with the dharma you are given,
where will you keep it,
or will you give it away
in silence, and in such
giving have it with you
at all times and places.
A reflection on Case 13 of the Book of Equanimity (従容錄, Shōyōroku)
It slipped away. He had no idea where it had gone, but he knew he had to find it. It could have been accidental, an errant passer opening the gateway and off it went. But he was so reliant on it that he knew he could not do much of anything without it. And he couldn’t get help finding it without endless waiting, a waste of time that put him even farther behind. But it was stealthy, and could easily hide in plain site. He hadn’t wanted to adopt it, but he had, and it had consumed him. It was that simple, life without broadband was unimaginable.
Enter the room slowly and look carefully,
since you are here to find something.
There is much within this room, but you
can see nothing save the old man,
sitting calmly, staring at nothing, staring
through you at nothing in particular.
You know he is the teacher, the one
for whom you have been searching,
Still, he ignores you, staring at nothing.
You walk around the room, from end
to end to end to end and he does
not move or speak, and so you leave.
He has given a great lesson, do you
appreciate what he has taught you?
You walk away angrily, say that he
is no teacher at all, that you are no
closer to enlightenment leaving
than when you entered, for you
found nothing but yourself.
As you leave the old man bows
as teachers do to Buddhas.
A reflection on Case 4 of the Hekiganroku {BLue Cliff Record)
I am compiling a list, ever so slowly,
of places I still want to visit,
and you may be surprised to find
that Paris, London and Madrid
are nowhere to be found.
It isn’t that they lack beauty, charm
and countless things to see and do,
it is simply that they have been usurped
by other places commanding my attention.
I’ve been to Zeeb and Pawpaw, if
driving by on the interstate counts,
and I am certain in Michigan it must,
but I do need a good laugh at times,
and Yeehaw Junction just might
satisfy my need perfectly, and, failing
that, there is always Surprise and Carefree,
and if I want to lose myself for a while
Nowhere is waiting patiently for me,
although I have heard it’s a bit hard to find.
No, what I really need is Happy Corner,
and from there, as I age I know I must
eventually, end up in Truth or Consequences.
You are perpetually searching,
but what is it you seek?
If you say it is wisdom,
how will you know it
if it finds you?
You may look
in a thousand mirrors
and no mind
will be seen
in none of them.
You are an oyster,
where is the pearl?
A reflection on Case 9 of the Shobogenzo, the True Dharma Eye
Between here and there
is an infinite gulf, and
finding yourself here
yet needing to get there,
what will you do when
you discover that all
you have is this pen?
