In a perfect world
Amichai and Darwish
have become good friends.
Each Thursday in the late morning
they would meet at the Basem’s Gallery and Cafè,
Mahmoud would always have Turkish coffee,
Yehuda would order an espresso or
a dry cappuccino depending on his mood.
In a perfect world
Yehuda and Mahmoud
sip their drinks and share ideas,
share words,
share lines,
share poems,
share the Holy City.
In a perfect world
Amichai and Darwish bridge
the seemingly unbridgeable
semitic gap, their poetry
the foundation on which peace
can slowly be built.
Wishful thinking in a world gone mad. This appeared in the May 2025 issue of Fresh Words: An International Literary Magazine
